Libraries are Our Future

How is your library helping you in these tough economic times? Tell us your story.

It is indeed difficult times, and in this time of “crises,” sacrifices have to be made by everyone in the civilian sector including our government & civil officials. I am a veteran of the United States military and have been honorably discharged. Being home since 2005, during these past few years my family and I always have helped others in times of need. I am fortunate to have the understanding of what it means to conduct humanitarian work. All of our family members, including our friends and their families, believe in the same. We all coordinate our efforts and help out with organizing our family’s ventures to cut down gas consumption in order to have our youth access our incredible collection of knowledge at our local and neighboring libraries. It saddens me to know that when people try to do better, as to having the capability of creating a better life for our youth and young adults and knowing we all can benefit from our libraries because of the knowledge of our librarians as well as the knowledge that we can access through out fabulous data bases that we have created, it all seems to have been for naught. We as a community will always pay higher taxes, educate our youth and young adults in our schools, but taking away our privileges to gain access to books and other means of knowledge is just insane. I have heard of the absurd notion that various officials in our counties and municipalities are getting raises for their positions. Personally, I feel that all county and municipal constituents should take a pay cut and that money should be funded towards our taxes and keep our schools, teachers, libraries and librarians. Our next generation of children is the backbone for our society. By cutting funding to knowledge and having it less accessible would be an abomination to our culture; after all it isn’t 1943. I hope that someone still understands that it is the American dream to build, create and to become what ever we want in life. Think before destroying the dreams of our children. For it has always been easier to take away than to give. - Vic, Toms River
